How to get ahead in life when it seems as if the world is out to get you…

Any chef will tell you that a great meal is made up of many ingredients, not great ingredients, but just ingredients! Well life is just the same and often as we go through life, the various stages are the ingredients we need for the great cook off. The cook off that will see God bringing us into our place of peace and blessings IF WE CANSTAY THE COURSE AND YES, HERE IN EARTH NOT JUST IN HEAVEN...

I think of the four Hebrew boys, Hananiah, Mishael & Azariah aka Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-Nego (Passage lookup link) and of course, Daniel who was later named Belteshazzar by King Nebuchadnezzar; all would definitely testify to the ingredient stages and the cook off.

It is with King David though, that speaks to me most about getting ahead when the world is against you. Anointed as King some twenty odd years earlier and before it came to pass; during his time in waiting, David exemplifies what true Servant hood, humility, submission faith & belief is all about and of course – how to get ahead in a mess.

1 Samuel 18 & 1 Samuel 19 - (Passage Lookup - Amplified Bible - There was a day when it all changed for David despite him serving King Saul wisely as verse 5 chapter 18 of the above tells us. Sometimes, it is amazing how it is other people who drop you in it, when you are busy doing all you should be doing. Well from the day that King Saul followed by David came home after battle and the women sang, “Saul has slain his thousands And David his ten thousands” the end of life as he knew it, sure came very quickly. In fact King Saul said “hmm, so the boy wants to take over all I the King has; to me they ascribe a thousand, but to the Johnny come lately, ten thousand. I am going to deal with this so and so.” Well quite clearly that was brother Don’s paraphrase, but the sentiment the same. David however was a remarkable man, as the very next day, David (as was his custom) played music for King Saul, Saul had a spear in his hand and then cast it at David; as Saul wanted to pin him (David) against the wall. The amazing thing is that the bible says, twice David escaped this:

1 Samuel 18:11 (The Message)
10-11 The next day an ugly mood was sent by God to afflict Saul, who became quite beside himself, raving. David played his harp, as he usually did at such times. Saul had a spear in his hand. Suddenly Saul threw the spear, thinking, "I'll nail David to the wall." David ducked, and the spear missed. This happened twice.

To fire off a second spear is not as quick as pressing a trigger and so we see that David held station; hold station!!! When someone is trying to use me as a dartboard??? On the other hand, as some may interpret this to mean, David came back a second time, when it was clear what Kings Saul’s attention were towards him. Either way David shows Servant hood, humility, submission faith & belief and as you read on, it is those character traits that led him to become the most famous King of Israel for mainly the right reasons.

So how do you get on when all seems against you – Serve with a good spirit about you, be humble and the most important of ingredients – have faith and believe/trust in God.

Love Brother Don
